Description
Adult clearwing moths have a wingspan of approximately 20–27 mm. The forewings are narrow, largely transparent with distinct veins, and bear a reddish‑brown transverse band that gives the species its common name. The body is black with yellowish‑orange markings, mimicking a wasp or bee in appearance—a form of Batesian mimicry common in the family Sesiidae.

Distribution
Synanthedon culiciformis is native to the Palearctic region, occurring throughout much of Europe and extending into parts of Asia. It has also been recorded in introduced populations in North America, particularly in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.

Habitat
The species inhabits deciduous woodlands, riverbanks, orchards, and gardens where suitable host plants are present.

Biology and ecology

  • Host plants: Larvae are stem and root borers primarily of willow (Salix spp.) and poplar (Populus spp.). Occasional records exist of feeding on other broad‑leaf trees.
  • Life cycle: The species is univoltine (one generation per year). Eggs are laid on the bark of host plants. After hatching, larvae bore into the stem or root and develop within a silk‑lined tunnel. Larval development may take several months, with overwintering occurring in the larval stage. Pupation takes place within the larval tunnel; the adult emerges through a pre‑formed exit hole.
  • Adult activity: Adults are diurnal and are on the wing from late June to August, depending on latitude. They are attracted to light and can be intercepted using pheromone traps specific to Sesiidae.

Conservation status
The species is common throughout most of its range and is not listed as threatened on major conservation assessments.

Remarks
Synanthedon culiciformis is of interest to entomologists and foresters because its larvae can damage young willow and poplar trees, though infestations are generally localized and not of major economic concern.
