Sydoriv Castle is a historical fortification located in the village of Sydoriv, in the Chortkiv Raion of the Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. It was constructed in the 1640s by Marcin Kalinowski, a Polish nobleman and Field Hetman of the Crown.
Historical Context The castle was established as a defensive stronghold on a narrow strip of land surrounded on three sides by the River Sukhodil. Its primary purpose was to provide protection against Tatar and Ottoman incursions. During the Polish-Ottoman War in 1672, the castle was captured and damaged by Turkish forces. It was later retaken and partially restored by the Kalinowski family, but by the late 18th century, it lost its strategic military importance and began to fall into disrepair.
Architecture and Design Sydoriv Castle is noted for its distinctive elongated architectural plan, often described as resembling a ship. The structure is approximately 178 meters in length and quite narrow, conforming to the natural topography of the high ridge upon which it sits.
The fortification was built primarily from local sandstone and limestone. Originally, it featured seven towers, though only portions of the southeastern section and three towers remain standing today. The defensive walls were designed to be thick and included multiple levels for artillery and small arms fire.
Current Status The site is currently in a state of ruin. It is recognized as an architectural monument of national importance in Ukraine. While it is accessible to the public, no extensive restoration projects have been completed, and the structure continues to undergo natural weathering and deterioration.
