Competition format
The competition followed a standard meet format: preliminary heats in the morning session, with the top eight swimmers advancing to the evening final. Each National Olympic Committee could enter up to two swimmers provided both had met the qualification standard.

Prior to the competition, the existing Pan American Games record was 1:55.45, set by Kaio de Almeida (Brazil) at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Leonardo de Deus’s winning time of 1:55.01 established a new Games record.
