Sweet Sensation (group)

Overview
Sweet Sensation was an American female vocal trio that performed primarily in the freestyle and dance‑pop genres. Formed in New York City in 1985, the group achieved modest commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, most notably with a Billboard Hot 100–charting single.

History
The group was created by producer and songwriter David Kershenbaum, who assembled three singers to capitalize on the burgeoning freestyle scene in the United States. Sweet Sensation released its debut album, Take It While It's Hot, in 1988. The album introduced the group's signature blend of electronic dance rhythms, melodic hooks, and harmonized vocal arrangements.

In 1990, Sweet Sensation issued its second album, Love Child, which included the single “If You Want My Love.” The track entered the Billboard Hot 100, providing the group with its most prominent mainstream exposure. Following the release of Love Child, the trio continued to tour regionally and appeared on several television programs that featured emerging dance acts.

By the mid‑1990s, shifts in popular music trends and changes in the group's lineup led to a decline in commercial activity. Sweet Sensation disbanded in 1995 after a final series of performances.

Musical Style and Influence
Sweet Sensation’s music combined synthesized basslines, drum machine patterns, and layered vocal harmonies typical of late‑1980s freestyle. Their sound contributed to the popularity of the genre in urban club settings and influenced later female dance‑pop acts that emerged in the 1990s.

Legacy
Although the group did not maintain prolonged mainstream visibility, Sweet Sensation is remembered within the freestyle community for its role in popularizing the genre among wider audiences. Retrospective compilations of 1980s dance music often feature tracks from Sweet Sensation, and the group’s recordings remain of interest to collectors and scholars studying the development of American dance‑pop.
