Definition
Sweet Sensation was an eight‑piece British soul group active in the 1970s, best known for their 1974 UK number‑one single “Sad Sweet Dreamer.”
Overview
Formed in Manchester, England, in 1971, Sweet Sensation emerged onto the British music scene after appearing on the ITV talent programme New Faces. Guided by panelist Tony Hatch, the group secured a recording contract with Pye Records. Their debut single “Snow Fire” failed to chart, but the follow‑up “Sad Sweet Dreamer” reached the top of the UK Singles Chart in October 1974 and peaked at No. 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 the following spring. A subsequent single, “Purely by Coincidence,” reached No. 11 in the UK in early 1975. Later releases, including “Hide Away from the Sun,” “Mr Cool,” “Sweet Regrets,” and “Mail Train,” did not chart. In 1977 the band entered A Song for Europe with “You’re My Sweet Sensation,” finishing eighth in the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. The group was dropped by Pye Records and disbanded shortly thereafter, concluding an active period from 1971 to 1978.
