Svetislav Basara (Cyrillic: Светислав Басара; born December 21, 1953) is a prominent Serbian novelist, playwright, essayist, and former diplomat. Widely regarded as one of the most significant contemporary Serbian writers, he is known for his postmodern literary style, satirical wit, philosophical depth, and experimental narrative techniques.
Biography
Basara was born in Bajina Bašta, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). He spent his youth in Užice and later moved to Belgrade, where he established his literary career. Beyond his prolific writing, Basara has also served in diplomatic roles, holding the position of Ambassador of Serbia to Cyprus from 2001 to 2005, and later to Spain from 2005 to 2009.Literary Career and Style

- Uspon i pad Parkinsonove bolesti (The Rise and Fall of Parkinson's Disease, 2006): This novel earned him his first NIN Award, Serbia's most prestigious literary prize. It explores themes of illness, identity, and societal decay with characteristic irony.
- Početak bune protiv dahija (The Beginning of the Revolt Against the Dahijas, 2010): A satirical historical novel that delves into the origins of the First Serbian Uprising, blending historical facts with humorous speculation.
- Kontraendorfin (Counter-Endorphin, 2020): Awarded his second NIN Award, this novel is a biting satire on Serbian society, culture, and national myths, continuing his exploration of historical revisionism and the absurdities of contemporary life.
- Dnevnik Marte Koen (The Diary of Marta Koen, 2000): A philosophical and historical novel that explores complex interconnections and narratives.
