Surma (woreda)

Surma is one of the woredas (districts) in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. It is part of the Illubabor Zone, located in the southwestern part of the country. The administrative center or major town within Surma woreda is generally referred to as Gechi.

Geography Surma woreda is situated in a region characterized by varying topographies, typical of the Oromia Region's western zones. The area generally experiences a moderate to high rainfall, supporting agricultural activities. Its landscapes often include hills, valleys, and fertile plains, with rivers and streams contributing to its hydrology.

Demographics According to the 2007 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), Surma woreda had a total population of 33,678, with 17,252 men and 16,426 women. Approximately 6.32% (2,128 individuals) of the population were urban dwellers. The dominant ethnic groups in the woreda primarily include Oromo, alongside other smaller groups found in the region. Oromo is the most widely spoken language, with Amharic also being significant. The major religions practiced include Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, Protestantism, and Islam.

Economy The economy of Surma woreda is predominantly agrarian, with the majority of the population engaged in subsistence farming. Key agricultural products typically include cereals, pulses, and coffee, which is a significant cash crop in many parts of the Illubabor Zone due to its suitable climate and elevation. Livestock rearing also plays an important role in the local economy.

Administration As an administrative division, Surma woreda falls under the jurisdiction of the Illubabor Zone within the Oromia Region. It is governed by a local administration responsible for public services, development initiatives, and local governance, under the guidance of the regional and zonal authorities.
