Supercoop

Supercoop was a Dutch supermarket chain that operated as a subsidiary of the cooperative retail group Coop. Established in 2001 and headquartered in Velp, Gelderland, the chain launched its first stores in 2004. By 2010, Supercoop had expanded to approximately 60 locations across the Netherlands, positioning itself as a “price fighter” with larger-format stores compared to the regular Coop supermarkets and the smaller CoopCompact format.

The brand was marketed as one of three retail formulas under Coop, alongside the standard Coop supermarkets and the village‑size CoopCompact stores. Supercoop’s strategy emphasized competitive pricing and a broader product assortment aimed at attracting cost‑conscious shoppers.

Financial and operational data (as of the late 2000s) indicate that the chain generated a net income of €24.8 million in 2009 and employed roughly 4,343 individuals by 2010. The chief executive officer at the time was F.R.G. Bosch.

In 2011, Coop altered its overall retail strategy, leading to the systematic closure of Supercoop stores. The brand was gradually phased out, and by 2024 the remaining Supercoop locations had been converted into regular Coop supermarkets.
