Definition:
Suntec City is a large integrated commercial and retail development located in Singapore.
Overview:
Suntec City is a mixed-use complex situated in the central region of Singapore, primarily within the Marina Centre area. Completed in the mid-1990s, it is one of the most prominent commercial and retail hubs in the city-state. The development includes office towers, a convention and exhibition center, a shopping mall, a hotel, and a waterfront promenade. It plays a significant role in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) and is easily accessible via public transportation, particularly the Promenade and Esplanade MRT stations.
Etymology/Origin:
The name "Suntec" is derived from "Singapore Technology." The naming reflects the development's original vision to support a technology-driven economy and serve as a modern business hub during Singapore’s economic transformation in the late 20th century. "City" denotes the scale and urban integration of the complex.
Characteristics:
Suntec City spans over 600,000 square meters and is architecturally notable for its circular design, incorporating feng shui principles. The centerpiece of the development is the Fountain of Wealth, which is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as one of the world’s largest fountains. The complex includes five office towers linked to Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre (now known as Suntec Singapore), Suntec City Mall, and the former Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The integrated design facilitates connectivity between commercial, retail, hospitality, and event spaces.
