Sunao Katabuchi (片渕須直, Katabuchi Sunao, born August 10, 1960) is a Japanese animation film director, screenwriter, and storyboard artist. He is widely recognized for his critically acclaimed works that often blend historical detail with poignant human stories, most notably his 2016 film In This Corner of the World.
Early Life and Career
Born in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, Katabuchi developed an interest in animation from a young age. He attended Nihon University, where he studied art. During his university years, he had the opportunity to work as an assistant director and script assistant under Hayao Miyazaki on the Studio Ghibli film Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), an experience that significantly shaped his approach to filmmaking.

Based on a novel by Nobuko Takagi, the film tells the story of two young girls in rural Yamaguchi Prefecture who use their imaginations to connect with the past and present.
