Sun-3

Overview
Sun-3 is a family of Unix workstations and servers produced by Sun Microsystems beginning in 1985. The series was based on the Motorola 68020 microprocessor (and later the 68030) and was part of Sun’s early product line that preceded the SPARC-based Sun-4 architecture.

History

  • Introduction (1985): Sun Microsystems released the first Sun-3 models as successors to its earlier Sun-2 line, aiming to provide higher performance Unix platforms for scientific, engineering, and commercial applications.

Later SunOS versions added support for System V features while maintaining BSD compatibility.
