Sugnens is a former municipality in the district of Gros-de-Vaud in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It is located approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) north of the city of Lausanne.
History: The area of Sugnens has a long history, with archaeological findings suggesting early settlements. The village itself is mentioned in historical records dating back to the medieval period.
Geography: Sugnens is situated in the central part of the canton of Vaud, within the fertile Gros-de-Vaud plateau. This region is characterized by gently rolling hills and agricultural land. The former municipality bordered several other communes in the district.
Demographics: Prior to its merger, Sugnens was a small rural community. Like many small Swiss municipalities, its population remained relatively stable over the years.
Administration and Merger: As of January 1, 2021, Sugnens merged with the neighboring municipalities of Dommartin, Montaubion-Chardonney, Peney-le-Jorat, Sottens, and Villars-Mendraz to form the new municipality of Jorat-Menthue. This merger was part of a larger trend in Switzerland to consolidate smaller municipalities for administrative efficiency and resource optimization. Sugnens now constitutes a locality within the larger Jorat-Menthue municipality.
