Sueli Costa

Sueli Costa (1939 – 2023) was a Brazilian composer, songwriter, and singer associated with Música Popular Brasileira (MPB). She authored a number of songs that were recorded by prominent Brazilian artists, contributing to the development of the country's popular music repertoire in the second half of the 20th century.

Early life and education
Sueli Maria de Almeida Costa was born on 25 March 1939 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She pursued formal music studies at the Conservatório Dramático e Musical in São Paulo, where she received training in piano and composition.

Career
Costa began her professional activity in the early 1960s, initially performing as a vocalist before focusing primarily on composition. Her work gained recognition through recordings by well‑known Brazilian performers such as Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, and Nara Leão. The thematic range of her songs covered love, social issues, and everyday life, adhering to the lyrical and melodic characteristics of MPB.

Among her most recorded compositions are:

  • “Coração Vagabundo” – popularized by Elis Regina.
  • “Vagalumes” – recorded by various artists in the 1970s.
