Sucupira (TV series)

Sucupira was a Brazilian telenovela (soap opera) produced and broadcast by Rede Globo. It aired from June 24, 1996, to March 28, 1997, at the 6 pm timeslot. It was written by Dias Gomes and his wife, Bráulio Pedroso, and directed by Marcos Paulo.

The series is a satirical comedy that tells the story of the fictional coastal town of Sucupira, ruled by the ambitious and corrupt Mayor Odorico Paraguaçu (played by Paulo Gracindo). Odorico's main goal is to inaugurate the local cemetery, which remains stubbornly unused due to the town's surprisingly good health. He schemes to find someone, anyone, to die so he can achieve his ambition and secure his place in history.

The plot is interwoven with various subplots involving the eccentric residents of Sucupira, including the seductive prostitute Marieta (played by Lúcia Alves), the local journalist and Odorico's political opponent, Diogo (played by Humberto Martins), and the mysterious Dona Mariana (played by Lima Duarte), who is said to be a witch and possess supernatural powers.

Sucupira is remembered for its sharp wit, social commentary, and memorable characters. It offered a humorous and critical look at Brazilian politics and society. The success of the telenovela led to a spin-off film, "Odorico Paraguaçu Tapete Voador," in 2002. The show has been re-aired several times on Rede Globo's rerun channels.
