Subrata Bhattacharya (Bengali: সুব্রত ভট্টাচার্য; born 3 March 1953) is an Indian football manager and former professional footballer. Primarily a defender, he represented the India national team and spent the majority of his playing career with Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, appearing in 897 matches for the Kolkata‑based side between 1974 and 1990.
Early life and playing career
Born in Shyamnagar, West Bengal, Bhattacharya began his senior club career with Mohun Bagan in 1974. Over seventeen seasons he became a mainstay of the team's defence, captaining the side in 1977 when Mohun Bagan achieved the “triple crown” (IFA Shield, Durand Cup and Rovers Cup) – the first such feat in Indian football history. He also featured for the India national team from 1976 to 1988, earning 41 caps and scoring three goals.
Coaching career
After retiring as a player, Bhattacharya moved into management. He served as head coach of Mohun Bagan (2000–2003), guiding the club through a transitional period and overseeing the recruitment of several foreign players. Subsequent managerial appointments included Tollygunge Agragami (2003), East Bengal (2007), Prayag United (technical director, 2014–2018), Bhawanipore (2018–2019) and Mohammedan Sporting (technical director, 2019). As a coach of Mohun Bagan he won the Indian National Football League twice.
Honours and recognition
Bhattacharya was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1989 for his contributions to Indian football. His playing and coaching achievements have made him a notable figure in the history of Indian club football, particularly in the Kolkata football scene.
Legacy
Regarded for his defensive skills and leadership on the field, Bhattacharya is frequently cited as one of the prominent Indian defenders of his era.
