Stužica

Stužica is a primeval beech forest located in northeastern Slovakia, bordering both Poland and Ukraine. It is part of the larger East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve and one of the ten component parts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe".

Location and Geography:

Stužica is situated in the Bukovské vrchy mountains, within the Poloniny National Park in Slovakia. The terrain is characterized by steep slopes, narrow valleys, and diverse geological formations. Its remote location and challenging accessibility have contributed to its preservation.

Flora and Fauna:

The forest is dominated by beech trees (Fagus sylvatica), with some specimens estimated to be over 250 years old. The biodiversity of Stužica is exceptionally high, featuring a wide range of plant and animal species, including several rare and endangered ones. Key animal species include brown bears, wolves, lynx, and various species of birds.

Conservation:

Stužica is subject to strict protection measures due to its ecological significance. Its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site underscores its global importance in preserving natural heritage and biodiversity. Conservation efforts focus on minimizing human impact and maintaining the natural processes that sustain the forest ecosystem. These efforts involve regulated tourism, research activities, and cooperation with neighboring countries to manage the wider biosphere reserve.
