Storyworks

Storyworks is an educational reading and writing program developed and published by Scholastic Inc. for elementary school students, primarily targeting grades 3 through 5. The program consists of a monthly magazine, teacher’s guidebooks, and supplemental classroom resources designed to promote literacy development through a combination of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and instructional articles.

Program components

  • Magazine – Each issue of the Storyworks magazine contains a curated selection of short stories, articles, poems, and illustrations. The content is aligned with Common Core State Standards and is intended to engage young readers while exposing them to a variety of literary genres and cultural perspectives.
  • Teacher’s guides – Accompanying each magazine issue, Scholastic provides instructional guides that include lesson plans, discussion questions, writing prompts, and assessment tools. These resources support classroom integration of the magazine’s material and facilitate differentiated instruction.
  • Supplemental materials – Additional products, such as activity books, digital resources, and professional development workshops, are offered to extend the program’s impact beyond the printed magazine.

Historical development

Storyworks was first introduced by Scholastic in the early 1990s as part of the company’s broader effort to enhance literacy instruction in elementary schools. Over the ensuing decades, the program has undergone periodic revisions to incorporate evolving educational standards, advances in digital publishing, and feedback from educators.

Educational objectives

The program aims to:

  • Foster independent reading habits and improve comprehension skills.
  • Develop students’ writing abilities across narrative, expository, and persuasive modes.
  • Encourage critical thinking through exposure to diverse voices and topics.
  • Support teachers in delivering standards‑aligned literacy instruction.

Reception and usage

Storyworks is widely adopted in public and private elementary schools across the United States and Canada. Surveys conducted by Scholastic indicate that educators value the program’s alignment with curriculum standards and its ready‑made, age‑appropriate content. Independent reviews in educational journals have highlighted the magazine’s high production quality and its role in motivating reluctant readers.

Related publications

The term “Storyworks” has also been used to refer to a separate literary magazine produced by various schools and community organizations, but the Scholastic program remains the most widely recognized usage of the name in an educational context.
