Storify was a social media service that allowed users to create "stories" by curating and embedding content from various social media platforms and websites. Launched in September 2010 by Burt Herman and Xavier Damman, it provided a unique tool for digital storytelling, particularly popular among journalists, marketers, and activists.
Functionality and Purpose: Storify enabled users to collect tweets, Facebook posts, YouTube videos, Instagram photos, Flickr images, and other web content, arranging them in a chronological or thematic narrative. Users could add their own text and commentary to provide context to the curated content. The platform's primary appeal was its ability to weave together disparate pieces of online information into a cohesive and shareable "story" that could be embedded on other websites or shared directly. This made it an effective tool for documenting live events, tracking trending topics, creating news summaries, or compiling social media reactions to specific incidents.
History and Acquisition: Storify quickly gained prominence for its ease of use and powerful curation capabilities. It was widely adopted by news organizations for live blogging and reporting on breaking news as it unfolded on social media. In August 2013, Storify was acquired by Livefyre, a real-time engagement platform. Livefyre, in turn, was acquired by Adobe Systems in May 2016.
Discontinuation: Following its acquisition by Adobe, Storify's future became uncertain as Adobe's focus shifted. On December 12, 2017, Storify announced its official shutdown, effective May 16, 2018. Users were advised to export their content before the final closure. The discontinuation marked the end of a platform that had significantly influenced the way digital content was curated and presented as a narrative.
