Stockwell tube station is a London Underground station located in the Stockwell area of the London Borough of Lambeth, south‑west London, United Kingdom. It is situated on the corner of Stockwell Road and Clapham Road (A23) and is served by two separate lines:
- Northern line – the station lies on the southbound branch of the line, situated between Clapham North and Oval stations.
- Victoria line – the station is positioned between Brixton and Vauxhall stations.
History
- The original station opened on 1 December 1890 as part of the City and South London Railway (C&SLR), the world’s first deep‑level underground railway. It initially served the line now incorporated into the Northern line.
- The Victoria line platforms were added later, with the station reopening for Victoria line services on 23 July 1971.
- A serious fire occurred on 20 July 2005, causing extensive damage to the Victoria line platforms; the station was subsequently repaired and reopened.
