Definition
Stockalper Palace (German: Stockalperschloss) is a Baroque palace located in the town of Brig‑Glis, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It was built as the private residence of the merchant Kaspar Stockalper and functions today as a museum and cultural venue.
Overview
Commissioned by Kaspar Stockalper (1609–1679), a prominent 17th‑century trader who controlled the trans‑Alpine trade routes through the Simplon Pass, the palace was constructed between 1658 and 1678. At the time of its completion it was one of the largest private buildings in the Alpine region. The structure dominates the historic center of Brig and is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. Its interior contains a grand hall, a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, frescoed rooms, and a series of courtyards that reflect the opulent lifestyle of its founder.
