Stobnica Castle is a residential building under construction in the village of Stobnica, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland. Designed in a revivalist style that emulates the appearance of a medieval castle, the structure incorporates a hotel complex and, since 2023, an educational pathway for visitors.
Location
The castle is situated on the edge of the Noteć Forest (Notecka Primeval Forest) at the coordinates 52°42′44″ N 16°36′47″ E. The site lies within a Natura 2000 protected area, a network of conservation zones across the European Union.
Design and architecture
The architectural concept follows revivalism, deliberately referencing medieval castle forms while employing contemporary construction techniques. The project’s architect is Waldemar Szeszuła. The building’s planned functions include residential apartments and a hotel, with ancillary facilities intended for educational and tourism purposes.
Construction history
- Construction began: 2015.
- Public announcement: 2018, when the project attracted significant media attention and public debate.
- Exterior progress: By 2022 the exterior was described as nearing completion. As of 2024 the castle remains under construction, though portions of the site have been opened to the public as an educational trail.
Controversy and environmental concerns
The castle’s location on the boundary of the Noteć Forest and within a Natura 2000 site has sparked controversy. Environmental organizations, local residents, and politicians have raised objections concerning the impact on protected habitats and the visual landscape. Despite opposition and attempts by authorities to halt the development, construction has continued.
Current status
The structure is still incomplete as of 2024, with ongoing building work. The educational path established in 2023 allows visitors to explore the site and learn about the project's objectives and surrounding natural environment.
