Description
Stigmella gimmonella is a minute moth belonging to the family Nepticulidae, commonly known as “pigmy moths.” Adults have a wingspan of only a few millimeters, typical of the family, and display the narrow, lanceolate forewings characteristic of Stigmella species. Detailed morphological characteristics (e.g., genitalia structure) have been documented in taxonomic treatments, but the species is generally treated as a taxonomic stub in the literature.
Distribution
The species is known only from the island of Hokkaido, Japan. No confirmed records exist from other regions, although related Stigmella species are widespread throughout East Asia.
Phenology
Adults have been observed on the wing during two periods: May to June and July to August, suggesting the presence of two generations per year (bivoltine).
Host plants and larval biology
Larvae are leaf miners on the following elm species:
- Ulmus laciniata (Manchurian elm)
- Ulmus davidiana var. japonica (Japanese dwarf elm)
The mining pattern consists of a narrow, linear gallery that expands as the larva feeds, typical of nepticulid leaf miners. Pupation occurs outside the mine, usually in the leaf litter or on the host plant.
Ecological significance
As a specialist leaf miner, S. gimmonella may play a role in regulating populations of its elm hosts, although its impact is considered minor due to its limited distribution and low population density.
Research and documentation
The species was first described by Shōnen Matsumura in 1931 under the name Nepticula gimmonella and later transferred to the genus Stigmella by Kuroko (1982). Subsequent references appear in Japanese lepidopteran catalogs and in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) database, which lists occurrence records from Hokkaido.
