Steven Van Zandt (born Steven Lento Van Zandt; November 22 1950) is an American musician, songwriter, record producer, actor, and radio disc jockey. He is best known as a guitarist and backing vocalist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, where he performed under the nickname “Little Steven,” and for his role as Silas Mack in the television series The Sopranos (1999–2007). Van Zandt has also been a prominent advocate for political and social causes, particularly those related to anti‑apartheid activism and the promotion of independent music.
Early life and education
Steven Van Zandt was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, United States. He grew up in a working‑class family of Italian descent and spent his teenage years in Middletown, Connecticut. Van Zandt attended the University of Connecticut, where he studied philosophy but left before completing his degree to pursue a career in music.
Music career
E Street Band
In 1975, Van Zandt joined Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band as a guitarist and backing vocalist. He has performed on numerous Springsteen albums, including Born to Run (1975), Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978), The River (1980), Born in the U.S.A. (1984), and subsequent live tours. His contributions are noted for their rhythm‑guitar work, occasional lead parts, and vocal harmonies.
Solo work and Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul
Under the moniker “Little Steven,” Van Zandt released several solo studio albums, beginning with **“*No *“Because of My Heroes” (1979) and *“Flex” (1982). He founded the band Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul, which combined rock, soul, and political messaging. Notable releases include Voice of America (1984) and Revolution (1989). Radio and television
From 1999 to 2015, Van Zandt hosted the syndicated rock‑music radio show Little Steven’s Underground Garage, which highlighted garage‑rock and proto‑punk music. The program earned a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package (2004) for its associated compilation album.
Acting career
Van Zandt’s acting debut came with a guest appearance on the television series Miami Vice (1985). He gained widespread recognition for portraying mobster Silas Mack, a consigliere to Tony Soprano, on HBO’s The Sopranos (1999–2007). He has also appeared in films such as Home of the Brave (1992) and The Banks of the Ohio (2005), and in television series including Rescue Me (2008) and Fringe (2011).
Political activism
During the 1980s, Van Zandt was an outspoken opponent of apartheid in South Africa. He organized benefit concerts, participated in the Artists United Against Apartheid movement, and co‑founded the anti‑apartheid organization Artists United for Human Rights. In later years, he has supported causes related to voter registration, anti‑war initiatives, and environmental protection.
