Steven Ruggles (born 1955) is an American historical demographer, sociologist, and professor of history at the University of Minnesota. He is best known for founding and directing the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS), a widely used database of historical census microdata, and for his contributions to the study of population dynamics, family structure, and demographic methodology.
Early life and education
Steven Ruggles was born in 1955 in the United States. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Michigan in 1977 and completed his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1982, focusing on historical demographic analysis.
Academic career
After completing his doctorate, Ruggles joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota, where he holds appointments in the Department of History and the Institute for Social Research. He has served as Director of the Minnesota Population Center (MPC) since its inception in 2000, overseeing a range of large-scale data infrastructure projects.
IPUMS and research contributions
In 1990, Ruggles launched the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS), which aggregates individual-level census data from the United States and other countries, harmonizing variables across time to facilitate longitudinal research. IPUMS has become a foundational resource for scholars in demography, economics, sociology, and related fields, providing access to over 100 million person records. Ruggles’ work on IPUMS has emphasized data accessibility, methodological transparency, and the preservation of historical census information.
