Steven Mackey (born 1956) is an American composer and classical guitarist renowned for integrating the electric guitar into contemporary concert music. He has been a faculty member at Princeton University’s Department of Music since 1995, where he teaches composition and guitar.

Mackey was raised in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Yale University in 1978, studying composition with Jacob Druckman and guitar with William Patterson. He completed his Master of Music in composition at the Yale School of Music in 1982, where he worked under the guidance of composer Bernard Rands.
