Steven Fletcher (footballer)

Steven Kenneth Fletcher (born 26 March 1987) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a striker. Born in Keighley, England, he represents Scotland at international level. Throughout his career, Fletcher has been known for his aerial ability, hold-up play, and goal-scoring prowess across multiple clubs in England and Scotland.

Club Career

Fletcher began his career with Scottish Premier League club Hibernian, making his debut in 2004. He quickly established himself as a first-team regular and a consistent goalscorer, notably helping Hibs win the Scottish League Cup in 2007. His performances earned him a move to English Championship side Burnley in 2009 for a club-record fee.

At Burnley, Fletcher continued his scoring form, helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League in his first season. Despite relegation, his individual displays attracted further attention, leading to a transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2010. He spent two seasons with Wolves, experiencing both Premier League football and subsequent relegation.

In 2012, Fletcher moved to Sunderland for a significant transfer fee. He spent four seasons with the Black Cats, often being their primary attacking threat, though his time there was punctuated by injuries. During his tenure at Sunderland, he had a loan spell at Marseille in France.

Following his departure from Sunderland, Fletcher joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2016, where he became a key player and prolific scorer over four seasons. He later had spells with Stoke City and Dundee United before joining Wrexham in 2023.

International Career

Despite being born in England, Steven Fletcher chose to represent Scotland at international level, qualifying through his Scottish father. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2008. Over his international career, he earned 33 caps and scored 9 goals for Scotland, including a hat-trick against Gibraltar in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier, becoming the first Scotland player to score a hat-trick in 46 years.
