Chronology
Bison priscus first appeared in the fossil record during the early Pleistocene, about 2.5 million years ago, and persisted until roughly 10 000 years ago in most of its range. Small, isolated populations survived in parts of Northeast Asia until the early Holocene (approximately 4 000 – 5 000 years ago).
Geographic distribution
The steppe bison occupied the vast grassland and tundra ecosystems of the Old World steppe belt, extending from Western Europe across the Eurasian Steppe to Siberia and into Beringia (the land bridge that once connected Asia and North America). Fossils have been recovered in locations including:
- The Russian Far East and Siberian permafrost.
- The Altai Mountains region.
- Western European sites such as the Upper Pleistocene deposits of France and Germany.
- The Yukon and Alaska (where the species crossed into North America).
Physical characteristics
- Height at the shoulder: approximately 2 m (6.5 ft).
- Body mass: estimated 600 – 900 kg (1 300 – 2 000 lb).
- Robust build with a pronounced shoulder hump, as in modern bison.
- Thick, long hair adapted for cold, steppe climates; seasonal shedding produced a lighter summer coat.

Ecology and behavior
B. priscus was a grazing herbivore, feeding primarily on grasses and forbs typical of steppe and tundra habitats. Dental wear patterns indicate a diet of tough, abrasive vegetation. The species likely formed large herds, a behavior inferred from mass death assemblages and trackway evidence. Seasonal migrations followed the productivity of steppe grasses, similar to the migratory patterns of modern bison.
Relationship to other bison species
Genetic studies of well‑preserved permafrost specimens have shown that B. priscus is the direct ancestor of both the modern American bison (Bison bison) and the European bison (Bison bonasus). Phylogenetic analyses suggest that after the Last Glacial Maximum, isolated populations of B. priscus in North America gave rise to B. bison, while those remaining in Europe evolved into B. bonasus.
Interaction with humans
Paleolithic peoples hunted steppe bison, as evidenced by:
- Stone spear points and butchery marks on fossilized bones.
- Cave paintings and portable art from sites such as Lascaux (France) and Altamira (Spain) that depict large bison-like animals consistent with B. priscus.
- Midden deposits containing bison remains alongside stone tools in Siberian and European Pleistocene sites.
These interactions indicate that steppe bison were an important protein source for Upper Paleolithic hunter‑gatherer groups.
Extinction
The decline of B. priscus coincides with climatic warming at the end of the Pleistocene, which reduced steppe habitats. Overhunting by expanding human populations likely exacerbated this decline. The last known populations persisted in the cold, permafrost‑rich regions of Siberia and the Alaskan interior, disappearing as those refugia disappeared in the early Holocene.
