Lorenz entered the USAF after graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1975. After retiring from active duty, Lorenz became a consultant on intelligence and security matters, contributed to various think‑tank and academic forums, and authored the book The Art of Intelligence: Lessons from a Life in the CIA (published 2015), which draws on his experience in military intelligence to discuss the principles of effective intelligence work and leadership.
