Sten August De Geer (19 June 1886 – 17 February 1974) was a Swedish geographer, meteorologist, and climatologist. He is noted for his contributions to the study of climate classification, atmospheric circulation, and the physical geography of Sweden. De Geer served as a professor of geography and meteorology at the University of Stockholm and was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Early life and education
Sten De Geer was born in Stockholm, Sweden, into a prominent scientific family; his father, Gerard De Geer, was a well‑known geologist. He pursued studies in natural sciences at Uppsala University, receiving his doctorate in 1915 with a dissertation on the geomorphology of Swedish lakes.
Academic career
In 1921, De Geer was appointed lecturer in geography at the University of Stockholm, later attaining a full professorship in 1932. He directed the university’s Institute of Meteorology and contributed to the development of systematic climate mapping in Sweden. His research emphasized the relationship between topography and weather patterns, particularly the formation of orographic precipitation.
Research contributions
-
Climate classification: De Geer advanced the Köppen‑Geiger climate classification system by incorporating detailed Swedish climate data, producing one of the first comprehensive climate maps of the Scandinavian region.
-
Atmospheric circulation: He investigated the behavior of the North Atlantic Oscillation and its impact on Scandinavian weather, publishing influential papers on seasonal temperature variability.
-
Permafrost and periglacial studies: De Geer conducted field studies on permafrost distribution in northern Sweden, contributing to early understandings of periglacial processes in boreal environments.
-
Hydrology and geomorphology: His work on lake formation and drainage patterns in the Swedish landscape integrated geomorphological observations with climatic factors.
Selected publications
- Klimatologiska kartor över Sverige (1934) – a series of detailed climate maps.
- Atmosfärens vindsystem över Norden (1941) – analysis of wind systems in the Nordic region.
- Permafrostens geografiska spridning i Skandinavien (1956) – study of permafrost distribution.
Professional affiliations and honors
- Member, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (elected 1945).
- President, Swedish Geographical Society (1950–1954).
- Honorary doctorates from the University of Oslo and the University of Helsinki.
Legacy
Sten De Geer’s interdisciplinary approach linking geography, meteorology, and climatology helped lay the foundation for modern climate science in Scandinavia. His climate maps and methodological contributions remain reference points for contemporary studies of Northern European climate patterns.
