Stefan Reuter was born on 16 October 1966 in Dinkelsbühl, West Germany. He began playing football at a young age and progressed through local youth clubs before joining the youth system of 1. FC Nürnberg.

Reuter made his professional debut with 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga during the 1984–85 season. His performances as a versatile defender and right‑back attracted the attention of Bayern Munich, where he won two Bundesliga titles (1988–89, 1989–90) and the DFB‑Pokal in 1989. In 1991, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund, contributing to the club’s domestic and European successes, including Bundesliga championships in 1994–95 and 1995–96 and the UEFA Champions League title in 1996–97. He also won the Intercontinental Cup in 1997. After a brief stint with SC Freiburg, Reuter returned to Dortmund in a non‑playing capacity before retiring from professional football in 2002.
International career
Reuter earned 37 caps for the Germany national team between 1989 and 1998, scoring one goal. He was part of the squad that won UEFA Euro 1996, playing in several matches during the tournament. He also represented Germany at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, appearing in the group‑stage matches.
