Stefaan De Clerck (born 3 June 1951) is a Belgian lawyer and politician affiliated with the Christian Democratic and Flemish party (CD&V). He has held several public offices, most notably serving as Belgium’s Minister of Justice from December 2008 to December 2011, and he has been the mayor of the city of Kortrijk since the early 2000s.
Early life and education
Stefaan De Clerck was born in Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium. He pursued legal studies at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven), obtaining a doctorate in law. Following his graduation, he practiced as a lawyer and later worked as a lecturer in law.
Political career

Local politics: De Clerck entered municipal politics in Kortrijk, a city in the Flemish region. He was first elected to the city council in the 1990s and became mayor of Kortrijk in 2001, a position he has retained through successive local elections. As mayor, he has overseen urban development projects and local administrative reforms.

National government: In December 2008, following the collapse of the Leterme I government, De Clerck was appointed Minister of Justice in the caretaker government of Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy. He continued in this role after the formation of the Leterme II government in March 2009 and served until the Verhofstadt II government took office in December 2011. During his tenure, he dealt with issues concerning prison overcrowding, the implementation of early‑release measures, and reforms to the Belgian judicial system.
