Steam Controller

Definition
The Steam Controller is a wireless game controller developed and manufactured by Valve Corporation for use with personal computers and the Steam gaming platform. It was marketed as an alternative to traditional console controllers, featuring a combination of conventional buttons and innovative input mechanisms such as touchpads and haptic feedback.

Overview
Announced at the Game Developers Conference in March 2013 and released in November of the same year, the Steam Controller was designed to enable a broader range of PC games—particularly those originally intended for mouse and keyboard—to be played comfortably with a gamepad. The controller integrates with Steam’s “Big Picture” mode and supports configuration through Steam’s online controller configuration interface, allowing users to create custom profiles for individual games. Production of the Steam Controller ceased in 2019, and it is no longer sold by Valve, though it remains supported by the Steam client.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Steam” derives from Valve’s digital distribution platform, Steam, which provides game purchases, digital rights management, and social features. “Controller” follows the standard term for a handheld input device used to operate video games. The compound name thus reflects the device’s function as a controller designed specifically for the Steam ecosystem.

Characteristics

  • Form Factor: Ergonomic, handheld design with two analog sticks, a D‑pad, four face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and two trigger buttons.
  • Touchpads: Two capacitive touch-sensitive pads (one on each side) replace traditional right analog sticks; they can be configured for cursor control, virtual mouse input, or as traditional stick emulation.
  • Haptic Feedback: Each touchpad incorporates a linear resonant actuator that provides tactile feedback, simulating the feel of mouse clicks or in‑game events.
  • Wireless Connectivity: Operates via a 2.4 GHz proprietary RF link, with an optional USB dongle for connectivity. Battery life is reported at up to 30 hours on a single charge.
  • Configurable Profiles: Through the Steam client, users can create and share controller configurations per game, adjust dead zones, sensitivity, and map inputs to keyboard/mouse actions.
  • Compatibility: Works with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, and supports most games available on Steam, including those without native controller support.
  • Audio: Includes a built-in 3.5 mm audio jack for headphone or headset connection.
