Stary Shigay (Russian: Старый Шигай; Bashkir: Иҫке Шығай, İśke Şığay) is a rural locality (a selo) in Sabayevsky Selsoviet, Buzdyaksky District, in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia.
Geography
Stary Shigay is located approximately 39 km north of Buzdyak, the administrative centre of Buzdyaksky District, by road. The nearest rural locality is Sabayevo. The settlement is situated at coordinates approximately 54°51′N 54°29′E, at an elevation of about 184 metres (604 feet) above sea level.
Administrative status
The village is part of the Sabayevsky Selsoviet, a rural administrative subdivision within Buzdyaksky District of Bashkortostan. It is classified as a selo, a type of rural locality in the Russian administrative system.
Demographics
According to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census, the population of Stary Shigay was 153. The settlement contains two streets.
Etymology and related settlements
The name "Stary Shigay" translates from Russian as "Old Shigay," distinguishing it from the nearby settlement of Novy Shigay ("New Shigay"). Historical records indicate that Novy Shigay was established in the late 19th century as a detached rural hamlet (vyselok) by residents of the village of Shigaevo, now known as Stary Shigay. The Bashkir name Иҫке Шығай (İśke Şığay) reflects the region's Bashkir linguistic heritage.
