Stan Bowman (born June 14, 1975) is an American former professional ice‑hockey executive. He is best known for his tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL), where he served as director of player personnel (2000–2007), assistant general manager (2007–2009), general manager (2010–2020), and president of hockey operations (2020–2021).
Early life and education
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Bowman attended the University of Michigan, where he played collegiate ice hockey for the Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey team. He graduated with a degree in communications.
Professional career
After completing his playing career, Bowman began working for the Blackhawks organization as a scout in 1998. He progressed through the front‑office ranks, becoming director of player personnel in 2000. In 2007, he was promoted to assistant general manager, and in 2010 he assumed the role of general manager following the departure of former GM Dale Tallon. During his tenure as GM, the Blackhawks won three Stanley Cup championships (2010, 2013, 2015). In 2020, Bowman was named president of hockey operations, a position he held until his resignation in 2021.
Resignation
Bowman stepped down from his executive roles in September 2021 after an internal investigation by the Blackhawks concluded that he had contributed to a hostile work environment. The investigation's findings were publicly disclosed by the team.
Personal life
Stan Bowman is the older brother of former NHL player and coach Mike Bowman (also known as “Mike” Bowman). He is married and has children. Outside of hockey, Bowman has been involved in charitable initiatives, including youth hockey development programs in the Chicago area.
