St. Joseph is a neighborhood located approximately two miles south of downtown Louisville, Kentucky, United States, and immediately east of the University of Louisville. It borders the Meriwether neighborhood to the north and Schnitzelburg to the east.
History
The area was named after St. Joseph's Infirmary, a hospital established by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The hospital building, once located at the corner of Preston Street and Eastern Parkway, was razed in 1980. The area was settled primarily by German immigrants from Bavaria in the early 1900s.
Geography
St. Joseph's boundaries are Interstate 65 to the west, Brandeis Avenue to the north, and Shelby Street to the east. The housing stock consists mainly of bungalow and shotgun houses. Three Jewish cemeteries—Temple Cemetery, Adath Jeshuran Cemetery, and Keneseth Israel Cemetery—are located adjacent to one another in the southern part of the area, which is more commonly referred to as the Bradley neighborhood.
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, the population of St. Joseph was 1,590. The racial composition was 83.6% white, 11.4% black, and 4.8% listed as other, with Hispanics comprising 0.3% of the population. College graduates accounted for 15.8% of residents, while 25% had not completed high school, and 10.9% had at least one year of college without a degree. Females made up 50.8% of the population and males 49.2%.
