St. Finian's Bay (Irish: Bàgh Naomh Fionnáin) is a coastal inlet and beach situated on the southwestern edge of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. The bay opens onto the Atlantic Ocean and lies approximately 3 km south of the village of Ventry, between the headlands of Slea Head and Dunmore Head.

The bay is characterised by a sandy beach backed by low cliffs and a notable sea stack. The surrounding terrain consists of rolling pastureland and scrub, typical of the Dingle Peninsula’s geology of Old Red Sandstone. The shoreline is subject to Atlantic swell, making the beach popular with surfers and swimmers when conditions permit. Access to the beach is via a minor road branching from the R559 regional route, which forms part of the Wild Atlantic Way tourist corridor.
Etymology
The name “St. Finian’s Bay” derives from the early medieval Irish saint Finian (Finian of Clonard, d. 560 AD), who is traditionally linked to the spread of Christianity in the west of Ireland. The association is reflected in the Irish language form “Bàgh Naomh Fionnáin,” meaning “Bay of Saint Finian.”
Historical and Archaeological Context
Archaeological surveys in the vicinity have identified remnants of an early Christian enclosure, including the foundations of a stone beehive cell and a possible burial ground. While these features are commonly interpreted as evidence of a monastic settlement dating to the early medieval period, definitive attribution to Saint Finian himself remains unconfirmed. The presence of such structures aligns with broader patterns of coastal monastic sites established during the 6th–8th centuries in Ireland.
