Srđan Kalember

Srđan Kalember (Serbian Cyrillic: Срђан Калембер; 22 June 1937 – 3 March 2023) was a Serbian professional basketball player. Standing at approximately 190 cm (6 ft 3 in), he primarily played as a small forward or power forward. He spent the majority of his club career with Crvena zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) and was a long-standing member of the Yugoslavia national basketball team, notably representing his country at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Early Life and Career Born in Belgrade, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Kalember began his basketball journey in the post-World War II era, a period marked by the significant growth of basketball in Yugoslavia. He joined the youth system of Crvena zvezda, one of Belgrade's prominent sports clubs, before making his debut for the senior team.

Club Career Kalember played for Crvena zvezda from 1954 to 1965, a decade of considerable success for the club. During his time, Crvena zvezda established itself as a dominant force in the Yugoslav Basketball League, securing numerous national championships. He was a key contributor to the teams that won seven consecutive Yugoslav League titles from 1954 to 1960. His consistent performance, versatility, and leadership made him an integral part of Crvena zvezda's "golden generation."

National Team Career Kalember was a member of the Yugoslavia national basketball team from 1957 to 1961, participating in 47 international matches. His most significant international appearance came at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy, where he represented Yugoslavia as part of the men's basketball squad. The team ultimately finished in sixth place in the tournament. He also competed in European Championships during his national team tenure.

Later Life and Death After retiring from professional basketball, Kalember maintained a connection to the sport, though not in a prominent public role. Srđan Kalember passed away on 3 March 2023, in Belgrade, Serbia, at the age of 85. He is remembered as one of the pioneering figures and celebrated players of Serbian and Yugoslav basketball.
