Spodnji Otok

Spodnji Otok is a small village in the Municipality of Radovljica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It is situated in the Sava Valley, north of the Sava River, and forms part of the historical region of Upper Carniola. The name "Spodnji Otok" literally translates from Slovene as "Lower Island," distinguishing it from the nearby settlement of Zgornji Otok ("Upper Island").

Geography: The village lies in a rural setting, characteristic of the Gorenjska region, surrounded by agricultural land and close to the foothills of the Julian Alps and Karawanks. Its proximity to the Sava River historically influenced its development and economy. Spodnji Otok is located a short distance from the town of Radovljica, the administrative center of the municipality, and is part of the wider Ljubljana urban region.

Demographics: As a small rural settlement, Spodnji Otok has a modest population. Like many villages in Slovenia, its demographic profile is typical of a community with a mix of agricultural and commuter residents.

Etymology: The name "Otok" (Island) for settlements in this area is believed to derive from historical geographical features, perhaps referring to land surrounded by water channels or marshy terrain, rather than an island in a large body of water. The adjectives "Spodnji" (Lower) and "Zgornji" (Upper) are used to differentiate between two closely located settlements sharing the same base name, indicating their relative position.
