Definition
Spielberg is a market town (Stadtgemeinde) located in the district of Voitsberg in the Austrian state of Styria (Steiermark).
Overview
Situated in the central part of the Styrian Mur Valley, Spielberg lies approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Graz, the state capital. The town covers an area of about 58 km² and has a population of roughly 7,800 inhabitants (as of 2023). Spielberg is internationally known for hosting the Red Bull Ring, a motor racing circuit that hosts events such as the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix and the MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix. The town’s economy traditionally centered on iron ore mining and steel production, although these industries have diminished, with tourism and motorsport now playing a significant role.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Spielberg” derives from the German words Spiel (game, play) and Berg (mountain or hill). Historically, the name is believed to refer to a hill that was used for recreational activities or games, although the precise origin of the toponym is not definitively documented.
Characteristics
- Geography: Spielberg is located in a valley surrounded by low mountain ranges of the Eastern Alps. The Mur River runs nearby, contributing to the area’s historic suitability for industrial development.
- History: First documented references to Spielberg date to the 12th century, when it was part of the Duchy of Styria. The town received market rights in 1525. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region’s rich iron ore deposits fostered the growth of ironworks and related industries.
- Economy: While traditional metallurgy has declined, the Red Bull Ring has become a primary economic driver, generating revenue through international sporting events, hospitality, and related services. Small‑scale manufacturing, agriculture, and commuter activity toward Graz also contribute to the local economy.
- Culture and Infrastructure: Spielberg maintains cultural facilities such as the municipal museum, a town hall, and a parish church (St. Johannes der Täufer). Educational institutions include a primary school and a secondary school (Hauptschule). The town is connected by the Southern Railway line (Südbahn) and regional road networks.
- Sports: The Red Bull Ring (formerly A1 Racing Circuit) features a 4.3‑km track with 10 turns. It was originally opened in 1969 as the Österreichring, reconfigured in 1997, and underwent extensive redevelopment in 2011 under Red Bull ownership.
