Spišské Podhradie

Definition
Spišské Podhradie is a town (Slovak: mesto) in the Spiš region of eastern Slovakia, situated in the Prešov Region and administratively part of the Spišská Nová Ves District.

Overview
Located at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Spišské Podhradie lies on the banks of the Hornád River, approximately 3 km north of the UNESCO‑listed Spiš Castle. As of the 2022 census, the town had a population of roughly 5,300 inhabitants. The settlement serves as a local centre for commerce, education, and tourism, benefiting from its proximity to historic sites and natural attractions in the Spiš area.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Spišské Podhradie” derives from Slovak components: “Spišské” denotes its belonging to the historic Spiš (German: Zips) region, while “Podhradie” literally means “under the castle” (from pod “under” + hrad “castle”). The name therefore reflects the town’s location directly below Spiš Castle. The settlement was first mentioned in written records in 1243, during the period of Hungarian rule over the territory.
