Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Chordata
- Class: Reptilia
- Order: Squamata
- Family: Scincidae
- Genus: Sphenomorphus
- Species: Sphenomorphus haasi
The species was originally described under the name Lygosoma haasi by George Albert Boulenger in the early 20th century and later transferred to the genus Sphenomorphus. Contemporary taxonomic revisions have placed it in the genus Tytthoscincus, where it is currently recognized as Tytthoscincus haasi (Boulenger, 1903).
Etymology
The specific epithet haasi honors the German herpetologist Georg Haas (1881–1962), who made significant contributions to the study of Southeast Asian reptiles.
Distribution and habitat
- Sphenomorphus haasi* is endemic to the island of Borneo. Verified records come from the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as from Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo).
- The species inhabits lowland tropical rainforests, where it is typically found in leaf litter and under fallen logs on the forest floor.
Physical description
Detailed morphological data are limited in the available literature. As a member of the Sphenomorphus/Tytthoscincus complex, it is presumed to be a small to medium‑sized skink with smooth, overlapping dorsal scales and a relatively elongated body. Precise measurements of snout‑vent length, coloration, and scale counts have not been comprehensively published.
Ecology and behavior
Observations indicate a terrestrial lifestyle, with activity likely centered on the forest substrate. Specifics regarding diet, reproductive mode, and seasonal activity patterns remain undocumented.
Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Sphenomorphus haasi as a distinct taxon; consequently, its conservation status is listed as “Data Deficient.” Habitat loss due to logging and agricultural expansion in Borneo may pose threats, but the magnitude of impact on this species is currently unknown.
