Description
Sphagneticola trilobata is a perennial, herbaceous vine that forms a dense mat of stems up to 1 m (3 ft) long. The stems are prostrate, rooting at nodes that contact the soil. Leaves are opposite, broadly ovate to trilobate (hence the specific epithet trilobata), typically 3–7 cm long, with a slightly fleshy texture and entire or shallowly toothed margins. The plant produces yellow, radiate flower heads (capitula) 1–2 cm in diameter, each composed of numerous ray and disc florets. Flowering occurs year-round in tropical climates.
Native range and distribution
The species is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and parts of China. It has been introduced, intentionally or unintentionally, to many other tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Africa.
Habitat and ecology
S. trilobata thrives in disturbed habitats such as roadsides, agricultural fields, gardens, and forest edges. It tolerates a wide range of soil types and light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. The plant spreads primarily via vegetative propagation; stem fragments that contact soil can root and form new clonal patches. It also produces abundant seeds that are wind‑dispersed, facilitating long‑distance colonisation.
Invasive status
In many introduced regions, S. trilobata is regarded as an invasive weed. Its rapid growth, ability to form thick mats, and competitive exclusion of native groundcover can reduce biodiversity and alter ecosystem processes. Management strategies reported in the literature include mechanical removal, repeated mowing, and the application of selective herbicides.
Uses
Traditional medicinal uses have been documented in parts of its native range, where extracts are applied for wound healing, anti‑inflammatory, and antimicrobial purposes. However, scientific validation of these uses is limited, and the plant is not widely cultivated for medicinal or ornamental purposes outside its native area.
Conservation
The species is not considered threatened in its native range due to its widespread occurrence and adaptability. Conservation concerns pertain mainly to its invasive potential in non‑native habitats.
