Sphaeromimus is a genus of giant pill millipedes endemic to the southeastern rainforests and spiny forests of Madagascar. Members of this genus are notable for their ability to roll into a tight ball (conglobation) as a defensive behavior and for possessing well‑developed stridulation organs that produce chirping sounds, likely used in courtship.
Morphology
- Body size varies, but the conglobated ball is typically comparable to a ping‑pong ball, sometimes larger.
- Males have a “harp” on the anterior telopod with 3–7 stridulation ribs; females possess a “washboard” on the subanal plate with 8–16 ribs. These structures are more elaborate than in other members of the order Sphaerotheriida.

Distribution and Habitat
All known species inhabit leaf litter in Madagascar’s rainforest ecosystems. One species, S. musicus, is restricted to the island’s dry spiny forest, while a cave‑dwelling species was described in 2014. The genus is highly endemic, with limited dispersal between forest fragments; habitat loss due to deforestation poses a significant threat to populations.
Behavior

Molecular and morphological studies indicate that Sphaeromimus is more closely related to the Indian genus Arthrosphaera than to other Malagasy genera such as Zoosphaerium and Microsphaerotherium, despite all belonging to the family Arthrosphaeridae.
Conservation
The restricted ranges and habitat specificity of Sphaeromimus species make them vulnerable to ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation in Madagascar. Their limited dispersal ability exacerbates the risk of local extinctions. Conservation assessments are needed for individual species, many of which may qualify for threatened status under IUCN criteria.
