Soyam Bapu Rao (born 28 April 1969) is an Indian politician from Telangana. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India, representing the Adilabad constituency in Telangana from 2019 to 2024.
Early Life
Soyam Bapu Rao was born on 28 April 1969 in Wajjar, in the Adilabad district of Telangana. He is married to Barathi Bai, and the couple has two sons and a daughter.
Political Career
Rao's political career began at the state level. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from the Boath constituency in Adilabad district in 2004. In the 2014 elections, he contested as a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate from Boath but lost to Rathod Bapu Rao. Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the formation of Telangana, he joined the Indian National Congress and contested the 2018 state elections from Boath, again losing to Rathod Bapu Rao.
In the 2019 Indian general election, Rao contested as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and won the Adilabad Lok Sabha constituency, defeating Godam Nagesh of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) by a margin of 58,560 votes, securing 377,374 votes.
Rao was denied a BJP ticket for the 2024 Indian general election. On 5 December 2024, he formally joined the Indian National Congress in the presence of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad.

Over the course of his career, Rao has been affiliated with multiple political parties, including the Telugu Desam Party, the Indian National Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. As of December 2024, he is a member of the Indian National Congress.
