Southwood, Calgary

Southwood is a mature residential neighbourhood in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Established in 1957, it is known for its tree-lined streets, large lots, and convenient access to amenities and transportation routes.

Location and Boundaries

Southwood is situated in South West Calgary. Its boundaries are generally defined as:

  • North: Southland Drive SW
  • East: Macleod Trail SW
  • South: Anderson Road SW
  • West: 14 Street SW

It is bordered by the communities of Haysboro to the west, Acadia to the east (across Macleod Trail), Willow Park to the south (across Anderson Road), and Braeside to the northwest.

History

Southwood was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1956 and primarily developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Like many post-war Calgary communities, it was designed with a focus on family living, featuring single-family homes, ample green space, and integrated schools. The community was planned to provide residents with suburban living while maintaining accessibility to the city core, which was significantly enhanced with the later development of the LRT system.

As a mature community, Southwood typically has a stable population with a mix of original residents and newer families. It is characterized by its demographic stability and often features a higher percentage of owner-occupied homes.

The Calgary Public Library's Southwood branch is also located within the community.

The community is well-served by Calgary Transit, with multiple bus routes and convenient access to the CTrain (light rail transit) at Southland Station and Anderson Station, both located on the eastern edge of the community along Macleod Trail.

Southwood is represented in the Calgary City Council by the councillor for Ward 11. Provincially, it falls within the Calgary-Acadia constituency, and federally, it is part of the Calgary Midnapore riding.
