Description
The Southern tuco‑tuco is a medium‑sized tuco‑tuco, with a head‑body length ranging from 120 to 150 mm and a tail length of 30 to 45 mm. Its fur is generally a uniform brown to reddish‑brown on the dorsal side, becoming lighter or grayish ventrally. The species possesses strong, clawed forelimbs adapted for digging, and its incisors are modified for excavating soil.
Distribution and Habitat
C. australis is restricted to the Patagonian steppe of southern Argentina, particularly within the provinces of Río Negro and Chubut. It inhabits open grasslands, shrublands, and semi‑arid environments characterized by sandy or loamy soils suitable for burrow construction. Elevational range extends from sea level to about 1,200 m.
Ecology and Behavior

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Southern tuco‑tuco as Least Concern, owing to its relatively wide distribution and presumed large population. However, localized threats include habitat alteration from agricultural expansion, overgrazing, and infrastructure development that can fragment suitable burrowing soils.
Research Significance
Tuco‑tucos, including C. australis, are frequently used as model organisms in studies of subterranean mammalian ecology, social behavior, and adaptations to hypoxic underground environments. Their fossorial lifestyle also makes them relevant to soil aeration and ecosystem engineering research.
