South Wentworthville is a predominantly residential suburb in Greater Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 26 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, within the local government area of the Cumberland Council, and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. South Wentworthville is an extension of the neighbouring suburb of Wentworthville.
Geography and Demographics
South Wentworthville covers an area with an elevation of approximately 46 metres (151 feet) above sea level. According to the 2021 Australian census, the suburb had a population of 6,913. Its postcode is 2145. The suburb is bordered by Wentworthville to the north, Westmead to the northeast, Greystanes to the south and southeast, Mays Hill to the east, and Merrylands and Merrylands West to the southwest and west.
History
The traditional owners of the land were the Darug (or Dharug) peoples. The Fullagar estate, located south of what is now the Great Western Highway, was first offered for auction in 1895. A subsequent sale of the estate occurred in 1902, covering the area between Coleman Street and Richmond Street, with Frances Street running through the middle. The M4 motorway construction later altered the road layout, disconnecting Frances Street from the Highway.
Governance
South Wentworthville falls within the state electoral districts of Granville and Prospect, and the federal divisions of Blaxland and Parramatta.
Transport
The suburb is served by the Liverpool–Parramatta T-way, a dedicated bus route that passes through South Wentworthville. The M4 cycleway, a cyclist and pedestrian path, connects the suburb to Sydney Olympic Park.
Notable Residents
- Chris Bath, a former Channel Seven newsreader, grew up in South Wentworthville and worked at the nearby Kmart in Merrylands.
