Soto Cano Air Base

Soto Cano Air Base is a Honduran military installation primarily used by the Honduran Air Force, but also hosts a significant permanent presence of the United States military. Located approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of Comayagua, Honduras, it is also widely known as Palmerola Air Base within Honduras.

The base serves as the headquarters for Joint Task Force Bravo (JTF-B), a United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) unit.

History

Construction of the base began in the early 1980s, funded by the United States during the Cold War era and periods of conflict in Central America. It was built as a strategic asset to project U.S. influence and support allied governments in the region, particularly in the context of the Nicaraguan Contra War. The base's strategic location and robust infrastructure made it a crucial hub for U.S. operations in Central America.

United States Presence

Since its inception, Soto Cano Air Base has maintained a continuous U.S. military presence, making it one of the longest-standing U.S. military presences in Latin America. Joint Task Force Bravo (JTF-B) operates from the base, focusing on several key missions:

  • Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR): JTF-B is often the first responder to natural disasters in Central America, providing aid, medical support, and logistical assistance during hurricanes, earthquakes, and other crises.
  • Counter-Narcotics Operations: The base supports multinational efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking in the region, providing aerial surveillance, intelligence sharing, and logistical support.
  • Security Cooperation and Training: JTF-B conducts joint training exercises and professional exchanges with military forces from partner nations throughout Latin America, enhancing regional security capabilities and interoperability.
  • Medical Readiness Exercises (MEDRETEs): JTF-B's medical element regularly conducts MEDRETEs, providing free medical and dental care to thousands of Honduran citizens in underserved areas.
  • Logistics and Maintenance: The base provides logistical support for various U.S. military and diplomatic operations in the region.

Honduran Operations

Soto Cano Air Base is also a vital facility for the Honduran Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Hondureña). It houses several Honduran military units and serves as a primary operational base for their aircraft, including fighter jets, transport planes, and helicopters. The Honduran military maintains sovereignty over the base and works in close cooperation with JTF-B.

Strategic Importance

The base's strategic location in the heart of Central America, coupled with its advanced infrastructure, makes it a critical platform for regional security and humanitarian operations. It plays a pivotal role in U.S. foreign policy and defense strategy in the Western Hemisphere, enabling rapid response capabilities and fostering partnerships with regional allies.

Future Developments

In recent years, the Honduran government has also developed a new international civilian airport, Palmerola International Airport, adjacent to the military base, which opened in 2021. This development aims to boost economic growth and tourism in the Comayagua region while sharing some infrastructure elements with the military base.
