Sophie Blanchard (January 25 1767 – July 6 1819) was a French aeronaut who became the first woman to pursue a career as a professional balloonist. She was the second wife of pioneering balloonist Jean‑Pierre Blanchard and continued his public exhibition work after his death, eventually receiving the title of "Aeronaut of the Official Festivals of the Empire" from Napoleon Bonaparte.
