Sophia Young is a Panamanian former professional basketball player who competed in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and various international leagues.
Overview
Born on March 5, 1984, in Panama City, Panama, Young played collegiate basketball for the Florida State University Seminoles from 2002 to 2005. She entered the WNBA when the San Antonio Silver Stars selected her with the 33rd overall pick in the third round of the 2005 WNBA Draft. Young spent her entire WNBA career with the franchise, which later became the San Antonio Stars, playing from 2005 until her retirement after the 2013 season. Primarily a forward/center, she was recognized for her rebounding, defensive intensity, and inside scoring. Throughout her WNBA tenure, Young earned a place on the 2008 WNBA All‑Defensive Second Team and consistently ranked among the league’s top rebounders.
In addition to her WNBA service, Young played for professional clubs in Europe and Turkey during the off‑season, including stints in Russia, Italy, and Turkey’s top women's league. Internationally, she represented the Panama women’s national basketball team in various regional competitions. After retiring from professional play, Young has been involved in basketball coaching and youth development initiatives in Panama.
